When I used Google’s service to search with the keyword “Principles of Success”, I found 108,00 results.  According to such results, people said there are 17, 13, 10, 12, etc. principles of success.  For Buddhist we have  only four principles of success that we can apply to all tasks.

The four principles of success has Pali name “Iddipada” which means pathways to success. To be successful we have to follow all of  these four principles.

1. Chanda : having heart of zeal.

The starting point is to love or be interested in what you’re going to do.  Should you don’t want or don’t like in what you’re going to do, how can you do it well?  You probably  “just do it”.  It’s not enough for success. You have to be KEEN to do it.

2. Viriya: doing with effort.

First, you love to do it. Then you do it seriously. Be dilligent and do it with your best effort. You have presevarance and not abandon it though it’s a difficult task. Should you have no knowledge, you try hard to find it from  sources or consult others.

3. Citta: committing oneself to the task.

This is all about dedication. You concentrate on what you’re doing. Think about it frequently.  Do the task with care.

4. Vimansa: using wise investigation.

You often examine cause and effect, pro and cons, gains and loss, blah blah  in what you’re doing.  Do evaluating and use result of such process to improve your task via planning, testing or experimenting, and re-evaluating.

Whatever you are ie student, teacher, worker, staff, supervisor, manager, CEO, leader, etc. , it does not matter. Should you want to be succesful, just apply the Ittipada to your tasks.

Boss

Many months ago, my colleague forwarded me an email with this picture. It’s the photo of Master Buddhadasa and his teaching concerns being boss. I found it’s interesting and want to share with you.

It said in the picture:

Should you have bad boss, it’s your opportunity to learn from him. Bad boss is an example (that you should not follow).

Should you have good boss, then you have good teacher.

Everyone has to be boss of others or boss of oneself.

Do not cling to what you are. But when you have to take any role, do it appropriately.

If your boss is unfaithful, don’t let time fly worthlessly. But behave yourself to be a faithful one. that’s enough.

We have limited time. Don’t waste your time to fight with things that consume your time. There are  examples, just follow the faithful examples.

buddha.jpgBuddha gave 84,000 different teachings to various types of people based on their needs. There are not only teachings that lead to enlightenment, but there are also many teachings for being good member of our family, our so society, etc.

As I have had corporate life for more than 12 years ago, I have seen many conflicts concern the relationship between employees and employers everywhere. In my opinion, one of the causes of such conflicts is they forget their duties (or they did not know there duties well).  And if you have this kind of problem, Buddha’s teaching  can help you.

Buddha gave teachings concerns the duties of good employers and good employees as follow:
Good employers should take care of their employees by :
a) assigning them work according to their competency.
b) paying wages that appropriate to their work and adequate  for their livelihood.
c) caring for them in sickness i.e. giving medical care.
d) sharing with them extra gain when you receive extra gain.
c) giving them appropriate holidays and leave.

Good employees should do their duties well by :
a) starting their works before their employers do. 
b) stopping their works after their employers do.  
(Should you have any argument on the a) and b), you may start from starting and stopping your work on time and avoid time abusing during working hours.)
c) taking only what their employers or companies give to them.
(You probably have heard about corruption cases in many big companies around the world. There would not be any corruption if the employees did not forget their duty.)
d) doing their work well.
e) spreading about their employers’ or their companies’ praise and good reputation.

I worked as a PR for a few years and found out that one of the best communication channels is the employees. When the company has to clarify anything, explain it to its employees first. And then they can spread the fact to their friends, family members, and other stakeholders like customers, suppliers, blah blah. In case the company has good news, also copy the same process.
Buddha gave these teachings for more than 2500 years ago. Anyway, I think these teachings are still up-to-date.

 I’m so lucky to have many good friends. Today’s is one of my best friends’ birthday. We have known each other for more than 23 years. Time flies.

Buddhists believe that to have good friends is good preparing resources for life and such friends can lead you to many other good things.

According to the book ” A Constitution for Living” – Buddhist principles for a fruitful and harmonious life by P.A. Payutto, there are four kinds of TRUE friends.

1. The helping friend has four features:

  • When his friend is off guard, he guards him.
  • when his friend is off guard, he guards his property.
  • In time of danger, he can be a refuge.
  • When some business needs to be done, he puts up more money than requested.

2. The friend thorugh thick and thin has four features:

  •  He confides in his friend.
  • He keeps his friend’s secrets.
  • He does not desert his friend in times of danger.
  • He will give even his life for his friend’s sake.

 3. The good counselor has four features:

  • He restrains his friend from doing evil or harm.
  • He encourages him in goodness.
  • He makes known to his friend what he has not heard before.
  • He points out the way to happiness, to heaven.

 4. The loving friend has four features:

  • When his friend is unhappy, he commiserates.
  • When his friend is happy, he is happy for him.
  • When others criticise his friend, he comes to his defence.
  • When others praise his friend, he joins in their praise.

To have true friend is one of the best luck. How many true friend do you have? And are you true friend of your friends??

Last few days, I blogged about a group of people punched hole on Monet’s work. Yesterday I found an interesting post from Thinkingshift : “Sunset Painting and Climate Change”. Thinkingshift reported “Climate change scientists are analysing Impressionist paintings – the sort that have vivid sunsets – to see what effect on world climate the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 had.  ………”

leaves2.jpgAP reported that  group of four to five people broke into the Orsay Museum in France through a back door early Sunday and punched a hole in a renowned work by Impressionist painter Claude Monet.

The painting, “Le Pont d’Argenteuil” , bore a horizontal tear about 4 inches in length that exposed threads of canvas. It looked to have been punched in with a fist.

This is an bad example of lacking of conciousness. When you loss your conciousness you can do everything including destroying a very nice and priceless painting. Oh dear…
